Opportunity Information: Apply for 10 589

The Basic Research to Enable Agricultural Development (BREAD) Program is a collaborative initiative between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Its primary goal is to fund innovative basic scientific research that targets key challenges faced by smallholder agriculture in developing countries.

A key feature of the BREAD Program is its requirement for proposals to explicitly link the research outcomes to practical applications in agriculture. This program expands on the previous Plant Genome Research Program (PGRP) by allowing a wider scope of scientific research and permitting funding for international collaborations through subawards.

The focus is on transformative basic research, particularly at the proof of concept stage, with a strong encouragement for original ideas that address significant productivity constraints for crops vital to smallholder farmers. While there is an initial emphasis on crop improvement, the program is open to innovative research proposals from various scientific and engineering disciplines, provided they align with its objectives.

Proposals must also consider the broader societal impacts of the research and, when relevant, involve international partners in collaborative efforts.
