Opportunity Information: Apply for NWRS R2 22530 1001
The Chiricahua Leopard Frog Conservation project at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR) aims to continue efforts to remove non-native American Bullfrogs and monitor the local population of the federally threatened Chiricahua Leopard Frog. This initiative builds on previous work from 2008-2009 and focuses on eliminating nearby bullfrog populations to prevent them from migrating to the refuge.
The project involves manual removal of bullfrogs, as well as ongoing monitoring of both existing and newly established populations of the Chiricahua Leopard Frog. Patrols will be conducted across the refuge and surrounding ranches to assess the effectiveness of the removals and to identify any new threats from bullfrogs.
Notably, the Santa Margarita Ranch has allowed for comprehensive bullfrog removal, which has shown success but requires continued efforts into 2010 to ensure total eradication. Additionally, connections are being made with the Arizona Game and Fish Department to support a Safe Harbor Agreement for the leopard frogs.
The project also includes plans to address bullfrog populations in the Pajarito Mountains, which could pose a risk to the frogs at BANWR. Overall, the initiative aligns with the Chiricahua Leopard Frog Recovery Plan and aims to protect and promote the recovery of this species within its habitat.Apply for NWRS R2 22530 1001
