The selected recipient will collect and analyze historical data on glacier sizes and volumes from various sources, such as old maps, aerial photographs, and previous research. They will also carry out current mapping of glaciers using remote sensing and aerial surveys to create a modern baseline. To achieve accurate measurements, the recipient will convert current imagery into a georectified format to determine glacier areas and estimate changes in volume. Additionally, the recipient will develop a systematic monitoring plan and research agenda addressing glacier alterations and related hazards, guided by USGS Circular 1175. NOROCK’s ongoing mission is to support natural resource management research in the mountain states, facilitating collaboration with various agencies, tribes, and academic institutions.
