Opportunity Information: Apply for 08HQPA0036
The Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NoRock) is offering a funding opportunity focused on researching the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and its impact on amphibian population declines, particularly in boreal toads from Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. While Bd is prevalent in breeding toad populations in both states, significant declines have only been observed in Colorado. This project aims to investigate the ecological and evolutionary factors contributing to these regional differences, including environmental settings that enhance chytridiomycosis.
The proposed study will involve comparative fieldwork in both Colorado and Wyoming, employing toad models and telemetry to gather data on toad habitats and Bd infection levels over time. Additionally, researchers will sample skin microflora and conduct a cross-infection study to assess potential variations in Bd strain pathogenicity and host resistance between the two regions.
With a total funding amount of $29,282 available for FY 2008/2009, the project will support one base year of research with the possibility of up to four additional years, contingent on outcomes and funding availability. Award notifications are expected around July 1, 2008, and project work must begin by that date, with no extensions beyond August 1, 2008. The research aims to provide valuable information for park managers addressing amphibian diseases and enhancing ecological decision-making in the Rocky Mountain region.Apply for 08HQPA0036
