Opportunity Information: Apply for 08HQPA0017

The Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit is offering a grant opportunity focused on enhancing the Everglades Depth Estimation Network (EDEN), which is vital for modeling the Everglades ecosystem under the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. The development of EDEN is ongoing, involving the collection of high-accuracy elevation data and the refinement of water surfacing algorithms.

Recent findings from the Gawlik Lab at FAU indicate that the hydroperiods in Water Conservation Area 1 (WCA1) exhibit greater variability and complexity compared to other areas, attributed to the unique topography that includes numerous small tree islands. Investigations suggest that elevation measurements in WCA1 are uneven, as some areas measure significantly higher than their surroundings without clear landscape differences.

To enhance the EDEN dataset, the proposed research will focus on understanding the variability and errors in the digital elevation model (DEM) within WCA1. This effort is essential for improving data quality and supporting effective restoration strategies. The research includes three key objectives:

1. Building a reference base of ground elevation data for WCA1. 2. Conducting a statistical comparison of the modeled EDEN DEM against actual ground elevations. 3. Documenting a processing program to manage EDEN surface data efficiently.

These activities aim to provide a robust framework for understanding and leveraging EDEN data in future research and management efforts in the Everglades.
