Opportunity Information: Apply for 08HQPA0008
The U.S. Geological Survey's Florida Integrated Science Center in Ft. Lauderdale is offering a cooperative agreement for universities to conduct research focused on forest structure and long-term vegetation monitoring in pine rocklands, a globally endangered ecosystem. This research is vital for understanding the south Florida ecosystem and aiding restoration efforts, particularly in relation to the Key Deer habitat.
The Big Cypress Field Station is particularly interested in exploring how different fire and hydrologic conditions affect vegetation in ecosystems like short hydroperiod wetlands and rockland pine forests. A key part of the opportunity includes working with 18 permanently marked plots on Big Pine Key, where previous studies involving prescribed fire were conducted.
The cooperative program has two main objectives:
1. Mapping trees in 10 unmapped plots and re-sampling trees in the existing 18 plots, which involves data analysis and some fieldwork. 2. Developing long-term monitoring recommendations for pine rockland vegetation, which includes collaborating with refuge managers and producing reports.
This work will contribute to critical questions for successful ecosystem restoration in the region.Apply for 08HQPA0008
