Opportunity Information: Apply for W81XWH 14 GWIRP CTA
The FY14 Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP) is offering two award mechanisms aimed at evaluating treatments for Gulf War Illness (GWI): the Clinical Trial Award (CTA) and the Innovative Treatment Evaluation Award (ITEA).
The CTA is designed for larger, definitive clinical trials (Phase II-III, FDA device class I-III) intended to significantly impact the health of veterans with GWI. It allows comparative studies of treatments and focuses on health outcomes such as biomarkers, functional status, and improvements in various symptom complexes like cognitive issues, pain, fatigue, and more. The ITEA, on the other hand, supports initial evaluations through smaller, early-phase trials without requiring preliminary data.
Applications can be submitted by a single principal investigator (PI) or by multiple PIs (up to four) working collaboratively on a single project. Each PI will receive separate funding, with one designated as the Initiating PI responsible for administrative tasks. Collaborative, multidisciplinary projects are encouraged, and teams must clearly define the GWI population and case definitions they will use for their studies.
The CTA does not fund studies primarily focused on psychiatric conditions like PTSD or ALS research unless ALS is included as part of a broader GWI study. Applicants are required to provide preliminary data and demonstrate a sound scientific rationale for their research. The proposed clinical trials must begin within specified timeframes after the award, and all applications need to include comprehensive plans detailing various aspects such as statistical analysis, safety management, and data integrity.
PIs must ensure access to the appropriate population of Gulf War veterans and demonstrate institutional support for their projects. Additionally, any investigational drugs or devices involved must comply with FDA regulations. Applications must also acknowledge the commitment to register the study with the NIH clinical trials registry.Apply for W81XWH 14 GWIRP CTA
