Opportunity Information: Apply for W81XWH 14 SCIRP TRA

The DoD Spinal Cord Injury Translational Research Award supports research aimed at bringing innovative ideas in spinal cord injury (SCI) research from the lab to clinical practice. Launched in FY12, this program has processed 21 applications, funding four to date. The goal is to enhance the translation of observations from basic science, population studies, and clinical experiences into practical applications for SCI patients.

Researchers are encouraged to approach translational research as a two-way exchange between basic and clinical science, rather than a linear process. Applications must present preliminary or published data relevant to SCI and the research proposal.

Collaboration is highly valued, particularly between academic researchers, industry professionals, and clinicians, including early-career investigators. While multiple collaborators can be involved, only one can be designated as a Qualified Collaborator. The application requires a Statement of Collaboration, a biographical sketch, and a letter detailing the collaborator's role and contributions.

The successful proposal must demonstrate that the project relies on the unique skills of both the Principal Investigator and the collaborator. Collaborators should contribute significantly beyond merely providing samples or patient access, and must dedicate at least 10% of their effort to the project, with their role clearly reflected in the budget. Collaborators must also have the freedom to pursue independent research objectives without direct supervision.
