Opportunity Summary:

The EHR Core Research (ECR) program is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funding opportunity housed within the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) that is designed to support foundational, long-term research in STEM education. The program encourages researchers to identify important research questions or persistent challenges and to conduct studies that can meaningfully advance knowledge and inform improvements in STEM education at scale.

Two main proposal types are supported. Core Research Proposals are the larger awards, intended for projects that directly study a foundational research question or issue that can inform the transformation of STEM learning and education. These projects can run for up to five years with a maximum budget of $1.5 million. Capacity Building Proposals are smaller and shorter, meant to fund the early-stage groundwork needed to move research forward in one or more of the four core areas. These may include activities such as building research partnerships, developing shared data resources or instruments, piloting methods, or establishing the infrastructure needed for future high-quality studies. Capacity Building projects can be up to three years with a maximum budget of $300,000.

The CFDA number associated with the program is 47.076 (Education and Human Resources). NSF anticipated making about 28 awards, supported by an estimated total funding level of $20,000,000, and the program did not require cost sharing or matching. The original solicitation (NSF Publication 13-555) was posted April 18, 2013, with an initial full proposal target date of July 12, 2013. It also indicated a subsequent target date of February 4, 2014, with proposals due on the first Tuesday in February annually thereafter. The opportunity has since been archived, with an archive date of December 18, 2014, meaning it is no longer active in that original form, though the underlying research themes may continue to appear in later NSF EHR solicitations.
