Opportunity Information: Apply for RFA NS 19 015

The Functional Target Validation for Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (ADRDs) grant opportunity invites applications that focus on validating newly identified therapeutic targets for ADRDs. The goal is to enhance the validation of these targets to ease the translation into novel therapies. Applicants should utilize existing human tissue expression or genetic data to identify targets or molecular pathways for validation.

The grant is structured in two phases. The first phase (UG3) offers funding for up to two years to develop technologies and models to manipulate and assess the effects of these targets in relevant disease models. After demonstrating feasibility, projects can transition to the second phase (UH3), where they will rigorously measure and cross-validate the outcomes across multiple laboratories following NIH guidelines.

The application must address both phases and encourage collaboration among independent laboratories. The scope covers various forms of dementia, including frontotemporal degeneration, Lewy body dementias, Parkinson’s disease dementia, vascular contributions to cognitive impairment, and mixed dementias.

Additionally, the opportunity is open to diverse applicants, including institutions serving Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities, Hispanic-serving institutions, historically Black colleges and universities, and more. However, non-domestic entities and foreign components are not eligible to apply.
