Opportunity Information: Apply for SM 13 002

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is inviting applications for its Fiscal Year 2013 Cooperative Agreements aimed at enhancing follow-up services for individuals who reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This program targets suicidal individuals who call the Lifeline, those discharged from emergency departments, and patients connected with Crisis Centers.

The initiative aligns with the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP), particularly focusing on promoting continuity of care for patients at risk of suicide. It encourages collaboration between suicide prevention programs, healthcare systems, and crisis centers to ensure a smooth transition for individuals after emergency care, minimizing the risk of recurrence in suicidal thoughts or actions.

Highlighting the significant volume of around 70,000 calls per month to the Lifeline, the program recognizes specific at-risk populations, including LGBTQ+ youth, American Indian/Alaska Native individuals, veterans, and military families. Notably, research indicates that the post-intervention period poses particular risks, thus emphasizing the need for follow-up care.

Immediate emergency interventions are provided for those at imminent risk, while for others, crisis centers offer referrals to mental health services. SAMHSA aims for service delivery to commence within four months of the grant award, supporting its broader mission to enhance mental health and reduce substance abuse across various demographics. The program is authorized under Section 520A of the Public Health Service Act and aligns with Healthy People 2020 objectives regarding mental health.

  • The Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Adminis. in the health sector is offering a public funding opportunity titled "FY 2013 Cooperative Agreements for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Follow Up" and is now available to receive applicants.
  • Interested and eligible applicants and submit their applications by referencing the CFDA number(s): 93.243 Substance Abuse and Mental Health ServicesProjects of Regional and National Significance.
  • This funding opportunity was created on Dec 31, 2012 and posted on Dec 31, 2012.
  • Applicants must submit their applications by Mar 1, 2013. (Agency may still review applications by suitable applicants for the remaining/unused allocated funding in 2025.)
  • The funding agency has allocated a total of $360,000.00 to eligible and selected applicants.
  • Each selected applicant is eligible to receive up to $60,000.00 in funding.
  • The number of recipients for this funding is limited to 6 candidate(s).
  • Eligible applicants include: Others (see text field entitled Additional Information on Eligibility for clarification).
  • Eligible applicants are members of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Network who provide 24 hour coverage and meet the additional eligibility requirements described in Section III 3.2. Eligibility to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Network is limited to crisis centers participating in the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline because they are the only crisis centers that are able to obtain the required consents from Lifeline callers for follow up activities. The limitations on eligibility are necessary to assure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to provide services to these high risk, high priority, or underserved populations, and to assure that relationships with state/local mental health systems are in place to assure that caller follow up and access to care occurs in an appropriate manner and timeframe. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Centers who received funding through the FY 2011 RFA for Cooperative Agreements for National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Follow Up or any Crisis Center previously funded through this program are not eligible to apply. The statutory authority for this program prohibits grants to for profit agencies.
