All individuals screened will be provided with education to prevent substance use and mental disorders among those who are HIV positive, information on how persons living with HIV might mitigate their risk of substance use and mental disorders, and information on what to do if behavioral health issues arise. In addition, because substance use and mental disorders can contribute to HIV infected individuals having difficulty adhering to HIV treatment, this program will improve HIV outcomes, which may reduce risk of transmitting the virus. The MAI TCE program targets comprehensive service approaches in the 11 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and Metropolitan Divisions (MDs) most impacted by HIV/AIDS. MAI TCE grantees funded under RFA #SM 11 006 are currently providing screening and referral to treatment for those who require care or preventive interventions for HIV and substance use and mental disorders.
