Opportunity Summary:

The National Science Foundation (NSF), through its Biological Anthropology and Archaeology Programs, offered the Integrative Paleoanthropology Grants (IPG) opportunity as a one-time, large, multi-year award aimed at pushing the field toward genuinely new kinds of synthesis. A special requirement underscored how important this integration criterion was in the review process: within the standard 15-page project description, proposals had to dedicate up to two pages specifically explaining (1) how the research is integrative and innovative beyond current norms and (2) why the work could not be accomplished without that integrative approach. Reviewers and NSF program staff were instructed to place significant weight on this argument, making it a core make-or-break component rather than a general aspiration.

Administratively, proposals were to be submitted to either the Biological Anthropology or Archaeology Program by April 18, 2012, following standard NSF program guidance, with the exception of the stated target dates. Applicants were also instructed to label their submission with an "IPG" prefix in the proposal title. Like other NSF proposals, submissions had to include required supplementary plans: any request involving postdoctoral support needed a postdoctoral mentoring plan, and all proposals had to include a data management plan. Proposals were reviewed using standard NSF merit review criteria, but with evaluation conducted through both external (outside) review and a specially constituted review panel to judge the competition-specific goals.

In terms of eligibility and basic funding terms, the opportunity was categorized as a discretionary NSF research grant in the Science and Technology / Research and Development area, with no cost sharing or matching requirement.
