Eligible Individuals (Program Director/Principal Investigator) Any individual(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) (PD(s)/PI(s)) is invited to work with his/her organization to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Eligible applicants include physicians and dentists (including MD, MD/PhD, DO, DDS, DMD, RN/PhD, or equivalent clinical doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution) and must have a professional license to practice medicine or dentistry in the U.S. The program is intended for investigators at the early stages of their careers. At the time the application for the initial IRP phase is submitted, applicants must be no more than 10 years from completion of their core residency training. Applicants will generally have completed or be completing a post residency clinical fellowship, and will have demonstrated sufficient patient oriented research experience to qualify for a tenure track level appointment. Applicants do not have to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, although selected Scholars must qualify for and maintain appropriate visa/residency status throughout the program. In order to be eligible to compete for a special Lasker Scholars Grant to receive the extramural award in the second phase of the program, the candidate must successfully compete and have obtained a full time appointment at a U.S. academic institution.
