Incremental improvements to existing technologies are not supported, and proposals lacking experimental characterizations of sensor responses are discouraged.

Innovative ideas outside these areas may be considered, but prior consultation with the Program Director is recommended to ensure they qualify for review. The duration of grants is typically one to three years, with an average annual award size around $100,000. Submissions related to water quality might be co-supported by the Environmental Engineering program, while photonic nanosensors for medical uses should go to the Biophotonics program.
