Opportunity Information: Apply for 20081104 PJ

The National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) is inviting proposals from institutions to help create a national digital archive of historically important newspapers published in the United States and its territories from 1836 to 1922. This initiative will take about 20 years to complete, with the final searchable database being maintained by the Library of Congress and made available to the public online.

Participating institutions will collaborate with state partners to select and digitize newspapers published in their respective states, specifically those in English from 1860 to 1922. Over a two-year period, they will aim to convert around 100,000 pages primarily from microfilm into digital format, adhering to the technical guidelines provided by the Library of Congress.

Funding is available for one organization in each state or territory, and previously supported projects can apply for continued funding to digitize additional newspapers. The program will be implemented in phases, with an initial focus on the specified time frame. For more information, interested parties can visit the Chronicling America website.
