This project aligns with MARAD's ongoing efforts, in collaboration with various stakeholders, to reduce air emissions from vessels and ports while advancing the use of alternative energy sources. Recognizing the scarcity of federal funding for maritime emissions reduction, MARAD plans to allocate $900,000 through cooperative agreements to support U.S. flagged vessels operating in inland and coastal waters, as well as the Great Lakes.
Eligible applicants include vessel owners, operators, or sponsors who commit to converting an existing vessel to natural gas. They must measure and document emissions using in situ testing and share the data with MARAD for public use. Funding will cover no more than 50% of project costs.
Proposals should provide a comprehensive project plan detailing conversion milestones, emissions testing procedures, the vessel's specifications, operational details, LNG supply arrangements, project partners, refueling infrastructure, and a cost share analysis.
Evaluation criteria for proposals include the conversion timeline, emissions testing duration, partnership effectiveness, ability to cost share, projected vessel operation hours, and thoroughness of the emissions testing plan.
