- All types of domestic entities are eligible to apply, except other Federal agencies, Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) Contractors, and nonprofit organizations described in section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 that engaged in lobbying activities after December 31, 1995. The Principal Investigator must be an untenured Assistant Professor on the tenure track at a U.S. academic institution as of the deadline for the application. No more than ten (10) years can have passed between the year the Principal Investigators Ph.D. was awarded and the year of the deadline for the application (for the present competition, those who received doctorates no earlier than 1999 are eligible). Each Principal Investigator may only submit one Office of Science Early Career Research Program application per annual competition. Additionally, a Principal Investigator may not participate in more than three Office of Science Early Career Research Program competitions. Applications must be submitted through a U.S. academic institution. A companion announcement describes the Early Career Research Program opportunity for full time DOE national laboratory employees. An employee with a joint appointment between a university and a DOE national laboratory must apply through the institution that pays his or her salary and provides his or her benefits. Eligibility exemptions will not be granted. There can be no co Principal Investigators and letters of recommendation are not allowed.
