Opportunity Information: Apply for SMART 2016 8950
The SMART FY 16 Support for Adam Walsh Act Implementation Grant Program provides funding to help jurisdictions develop or improve their compliance with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA mandates that all states, the District of Columbia, major U.S. territories, and federally recognized Indian tribes maintain a sex offender registry. It also requires sex offenders to register in jurisdictions where they live, work, or study, with detailed provisions about the information to be collected and verified.
The grant seeks proposals that enhance SORNA implementation. For jurisdictions that have not substantially implemented SORNA, applicants must detail how their projects will help achieve this and include an active working group focused on SORNA compliance. Successful applicants are expected to submit semi-annual progress reports.
For jurisdictions that have already complied with SORNA, the project proposal should demonstrate how it will strengthen ongoing efforts or improve existing programs related to sex offender registration and notification.
Examples of eligible projects include: - Developing legal and administrative materials to meet SORNA requirements. - Fostering interagency collaboration to enhance implementation efforts. - Improving law enforcement information sharing at local and jurisdiction levels. - Digitizing records as part of SORNA compliance. - Training officials responsible for sex offender management. - Enhancing strategies for address verification and community awareness.
Tribal jurisdictions can apply collaboratively to share resources or tackle implementation collectively. They can also seek funding to enhance sustainment strategies or improve inter-tribal cooperation for better compliance with SORNA.
States with tribal jurisdictions may support local or state initiatives to improve the registration and notification processes for these tribes and enhance collaboration on information sharing. Applications must include relevant documentation demonstrating cooperation among jurisdictions.
Lastly, state and territory applicants receiving Byrne/JAG funding should clarify how their proposed projects complement or differentiate from activities under that funding to avoid duplication.Apply for SMART 2016 8950
