- The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) is the only institution mandated by the Government of Tanzania (Mainland) to carry out blood transfusion services in the country. It was established in 2004 with the goal of ensuring safe and sufficient blood supply for the country. Prior to 2004, blood was obtained solely from family replacement donors at fragmented hospital based transfusion units that lacked standardization of procedures. The Policy guidelines on blood transfusion in (2006) recommended a shift from hospital based transfusion service to centralized system which would later be semi autonomous and independent. This system ensures standardization with improved quality of blood supply and thus less transmission of HIV and other transfusion transmissible infections (TTIs). It also ensures that the same standard operating procedures (SOPs) are used nationally in the various blood transfusion centers. It is therefore necessary for this work to be coordinated by NBTS under the MOHSW. From 2005 to 2014, there have been two, five year cooperative agreements between CDC and NBTS.
