Opportunity Information: Apply for L13AS00145
The BLM grant opportunity focuses on the reintroduction of greater sage grouse in Lincoln County, Washington. Initially, the project aimed to translocate 40 birds annually from 2008 to 2011 with a balanced sex ratio. However, due to higher mortality rates in early years and fewer birds being successfully translocated, the focus has shifted to continuing these efforts through at least 2014.
Sage grouse are typically captured during the spring breeding season or in late summer, provided conditions allow. Each bird receives a health certification from a qualified veterinarian, with sex and age determined prior to translocation. Blood samples are collected for disease testing and genetic analysis. The birds are fitted with uniquely numbered bands and battery-operated radio transmitters that last up to 24 months before their release.
The release occurs within 36 hours of capture, ideally at dawn, using a specialized box to enable the simultaneous release of multiple birds after a short acclimation period. Sharp-tailed grouse are captured similarly, using walk-in traps during their breeding season.
Success will be assessed through monitoring at the release site, focusing on movement, habitat use, productivity, survival rates, and population size. This data will help determine the need for further translocations, habitat enhancements, or changes in release strategies. Long-term population establishment remains the ultimate goal.Apply for L13AS00145
