Opportunity Information: Apply for G11AS20041
The USGS Alaska Science Center is providing funding for research focused on understanding how climate-driven changes in phenology affect the availability and nutrient levels in the summer forages of arctic ungulates, specifically caribou and muskoxen. Due to significant seasonal variations in the abundance and quality of plants, it's crucial for these animals to build up nutritional reserves during a brief growing season essential for reproduction and survival in winter.
The research aims to examine long-term trends in temperature and plant phenology, as well as the timing and availability of nutrients, which could influence ungulate populations from a nutritional perspective. Fieldwork for the study involves collecting samples of key forages every two weeks from May to September over the years 2011 to 2013 along the Haul Road from Toolik Lake to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. A total of 405 samples will be analyzed for various nutrient concentrations, including gross energy and essential minerals. This work is anticipated to shed light on the potential impacts of climate change on the nutritional ecology of these northern herbivores.Apply for G11AS20041
