Opportunity Information: Apply for P14AS00185
The National Park Service (NPS) is announcing a funding opportunity for a project aimed at enhancing satellite data products, specifically for monitoring landscape processes in Alaska's national parks. This initiative, in collaboration with the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) through the Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) program, has an intended award of $44,890.
The project will expand the existing satellite data resources from the Geographic Information Network of Alaska (GINA) by incorporating Vegetative Greenness (NDVI) and Snow products. These products will support NPS staff in monitoring ecological changes, such as the timing of snow cover, ice formation on freshwater bodies, and shifts in vegetation growth periods. This effort builds on prior collaborations between NPS and GINA, focusing on historical satellite data from MODIS and AVHRR sensors.
Four primary objectives of the project include updating MODIS NDVI and Snow metrics, developing a processing algorithm for AVHRR-derived NDVI, evaluating satellite data for snow metrics production, and making this data accessible to NPS and the public through various online platforms.
UAF GINA will be responsible for significant tasks, including the maintenance and updating of MODIS NDVI and snow metrics, developing AVHRR NDVI products, and ensuring easy access to satellite data. Meanwhile, NPS staff will collaborate with GINA to automate data analysis processes and ensure the quality of the products delivered.
The justification for a single-source award stems from GINA’s unique expertise and existing infrastructure for managing satellite data, making competition impractical for this continuation of ongoing collaborative efforts. The project emphasizes continued cooperation to enhance ecological monitoring across Alaska's national parks.Apply for P14AS00185
