Opportunity Information: Apply for FWS 08 RO 649 001

The FWS Midwest Conservation Internship Program aims to engage culturally diverse college students in natural resource careers through hands-on internships. Managed by the National Wildlife Refuge System across eight Midwest states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin), the program seeks to inspire a new generation of conservationists and ecologists, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Interns will participate in a 12-week summer program, typically running from May 15 to September 30, working on various conservation activities like invasive species management and habitat restoration, alongside formal training from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Each selected intern will receive a stipend of at least $4,800 for their services, with additional costs for housing, transportation, and insurance covered by the program, up to a maximum of $7,500 per intern.

The USFWS invites proposals to manage the recruitment and administration of these internships, with the aim of attracting suitable candidates, particularly those in their junior or senior years of study in relevant fields. Between 5 and 15 interns are anticipated annually across multiple USFWS stations. While interns will be treated as volunteers during their service, they may later be considered for permanent positions or the USFWS Student Career Experience Program.

Proposals will be evaluated based on several criteria, including the applicant’s ability to recruit candidates effectively, the financial capability to support the program, existing connections with educational institutions, and the methods proposed for managing the internships. Interested applicants must submit their proposals by February 15, 2008, to the designated USFWS representative. Late applications may not be considered.
