Opportunity Information: Apply for FWS 08 RW 000 006
The Hail Point Living Shoreline Project (HPLSP) is an initiative aimed at preserving vital fish and wildlife habitats at the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, part of the Chesapeake Marshlands National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This project will implement segmented headland breakwaters to safeguard the shoreline from erosion and facilitate a future living shoreline development.
The project unfolds in two phases. Phase I, the focus of the current proposal, involves constructing headland breakwaters along the eroded shoreline at Hail Point and protecting submerged aquatic vegetation in nearby Hail Creek. The design comprises five 200-foot breakwater sections with 50-foot openings, covering 8.9 acres and 2,015 feet of shoreline. Hail Creek, sheltered by these structures, supports rich aquatic habitats, including extensive submerged aquatic vegetation across 108 acres.
Phase I is crucial for preventing further erosion in the area. Without these protective measures, both Hail Point and Hail Creek risk significant habitat loss. Phase II, which depends on securing additional funding, will enhance shoreline stability and foster new habitats, including 1.5 acres of marsh and open beach along 1,200 feet of shoreline, benefiting local wildlife.Apply for FWS 08 RW 000 006
