Applications are expected to include a concrete plan and timeline for reaching independence, including steps toward securing independent research support (for example, preparing for an R-level grant submission or an equivalent independent funding application). While the award provides salary and research support, NIH notes that salary support levels and other allowable costs are not uniform across participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs). Several administrative rules shape how applicants should plan. K01 awards are not renewable and are not transferable from one principal investigator to another, which underscores that the award is a one-time, individualized development bridge to independence. A candidate cannot concurrently apply for, or have pending, another NIH career development award at the same time as a K01 application. NIH allows up to two revisions (resubmissions) of an application.
