The Peer Reviewed Alzheimer's Convergence Science Research Award (CSRA) is a Department of the Army, U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA) funding opportunity under the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) and the Peer Reviewed Alzheimer's Research Program (PRARP). In addition to one or more Overarching Challenges, proposals must also address at least one FY14 PRARP Focus Area, which narrows the scientific emphasis while still leaving room for strong, well-justified ideas outside the listed categories. The first focus area is Genomics/Proteomics/Bioinformatics, supporting studies and enabling technologies that use genetic, proteomic, epigenetic, and computational approaches to characterize neurological changes associated with TBI and subsequent AD; diagnostics and testing platforms that fit this theme may also fall here. The second focus area is Pathology of Tau, backing research and technologies aimed at clarifying the basic disease mechanisms involving tau pathology as it relates to both TBI and Alzheimer's. The third focus area targets New Roles of Non-Neuronal Cells in TBI/AD Pathogenesis, encouraging studies and tools that investigate how astrocytes and other non-neuronal cells may contribute to neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's-related changes following TBI.

While clinical research can be supported under this mechanism, the program draws a clear boundary around what it does not want to prioritize for FY14. Specifically discouraged are projects centered on pharmacologic interventions, meaning clinical or basic studies that require investigational drugs or even FDA-approved medicines as the main experimental lever. Also discouraged are drug discovery and development efforts that directly aim to produce new investigational medicines, drugs, or agents. In other words, the CSRA is aimed more at resources, tools, mechanisms, biomarkers, diagnostics, and enabling technologies than at traditional therapeutic drug development pipelines.
